Troon Golf is well known for its upscale golf courses around the world, and Maderas is no exception. The course was designed in a collaborative effort by Johnny Miller and Robert Muir Graves and is set within a beautiful secluded valley. With a brand new clubhouse and the course getting rave reviews, San Diegans have much to brag about here. The staff is friendly and professional, the grounds immaculate, and the homes? Well, let's just say you better bring a big bank account if you want to live in the prestigious gated community above the course. Newly developed custom homes at Heritage start near $2 million. The semi-private club is open to the public, but there are already 60 active members to get acquainted with.

- Golf: Par 72. Maderas, with its emphasis on top-notch course conditions and service, is among a new breed of "destination" courses in the Southern California area that include Aviara, Meadows Del Mar, and Pelican Hill.
The course is tricky due to its layout and tight, sloping fairways, but Mr. Miller has offered a bailout area on many of the holes, you just have to know where to find them.
At 6,352 yards from the silver tees and 6,654 from the gold-five tee boxes altogether-the course isn't particularly long. But it has 200 feet in elevation changes, plus three lakes, a lot of native sycamores and oaks, and the creek comes into play on almost every hole. The greens are consistant, but huge and are severly sloped and breaking, demanding precision in your short game. Driving range and practice greens. - Green Fees: $75-$135 per round; Rates vary by day and playing time; call pro shop for information on fees, policies and specials. Twilight rates available. Didn't get enough Maderas in one round? play over for $45.
- Clubhouse: I don't which the members enjoy more, the phenomenol course, or the gorgeous new clubhouse, which features an elegant and upscale design. Inside are a full service pro shop, including a nice retail shop, and restaurant and there's an outdoor eating area as well, overlooking the course.
- Community Highlights: Massive new custom estate homes dot the surrounding hills in a prestigious, guard-gated community above the course and are situated on huge lots of 1.5 acres or more, offering the latest amenities and spacious designs of over 4,000 feet. The area is fairly remote, making it extremely private and quiet, except for the occassional thwack of a golf shot.
- Schools: Contact the Poway School District for information.
- City Highlights: Poway is a beautiful community popular with families in a traditional environment condusive to recreational living. Locals enjoy the world famous San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, unlimited water sports, Padres Baseball, Chargers Football, Del Mar Thoroughbred Racing, world-class restaurants, ballooning, regional wineries and fantastic beaches.
- Proximity: About 35 minutes from downtown and San Diego Internat'l Airport.
- Accommodations: Nothing in the immediate area, but there are several lodging options in the nearby city of Poway.
